A laptop computer is a real necessity for the traveling telecommuter. To minimize problems and make life easier, we prefer to use the same computer at home as on the road. Too many times we have left for a trip, only to find that some crucial file or application was not installed on the laptop, or the laptop had not been updated with the latest version of software, etc. Therefore, we recommend gettting a laptop with enough power for daily use which can be undocked and taken on the road with the push of a button.

Some basic necessities these days:

• Wireless LAN  Access (WiFi or WLAN) or see the D-Link Pocket Router
• Built in stereo sound with headset jack (great for movies on the plane)
• Spare battery (if you fly a lot) or airplane charger (can be tricky unless you use one specific airline)
• Good padded carrying case with shoulder strap
• CD or DVD drive (preferably one that is read-write)

We have had great luck with the Sony Vaio line of computers, and their customer service is excellent when you need them. In particular, the lightweight models they sell are some of the better ones on the market, while their standard models are less impressive against much broader competition.
